Job Summary
We are looking for a skilled and compassionate Critical Care Nurse / ICU Nurse to join our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team. This role requires an experienced nurse who can provide advanced, life-sustaining care to critically ill patients with severe health conditions. The ICU Nurse will work in a high-pressure environment, performing comprehensive patient assessments, administering complex treatments, and closely monitoring patients’ vital signs. The ideal candidate is attentive, detail-oriented, and capable of making quick decisions in critical situations.

Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Monitoring & Assessment

  • Conduct continuous, thorough assessments of critically ill patients to monitor vital signs, neurological status, and other key indicators.
  • Use advanced monitoring equipment, including ECG, ventilators, and infusion pumps, to maintain patient stability.

2. Critical Care Management

  • Administer complex medications and intravenous therapies, ensuring accurate dosages and timely administration.
  • Provide life-support treatments, including ventilator management, dialysis, and blood transfusions, as needed.
  • Respond swiftly to life-threatening emergencies, managing conditions such as respiratory failure, sepsis, and multi-organ failure.

3. Care Planning & Documentation

  • Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team, tailoring interventions to patient needs.
  • Document all patient interactions, treatments, and progress accurately in the patient’s medical record in compliance with hospital protocols.

4. Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other specialists to coordinate patient care.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients’ families, providing updates and education on the patient’s condition and ICU procedures.

5. Equipment & Safety Management

  • Operate and troubleshoot critical care equipment such as ventilators, defibrillators, and invasive monitoring devices.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols and safety guidelines to prevent complications and ensure a sterile environment.

6. Patient & Family Support

  • Offer emotional support and guidance to patients and their families, recognizing the stress associated with ICU care.
  • Educate families on the ICU environment, patient progress, and any post-ICU care requirements.

7. Continuous Improvement & Education

  • Participate in ongoing ICU training, emergency drills, and professional development activities.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and ICU operations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred).
  • Must hold a current and valid nursing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Critical Care or Intensive Care settings.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is required.
  • Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCN) or similar specialty training is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in advanced patient monitoring, ventilator care, and intravenous therapy.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and time-management abilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle complex, high-pressure situations calmly.

Working Conditions

  • Shift-Based Work: This role requires flexibility to work in a shift-based schedule, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical Demands: Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting and repositioning patients, as well as standing and walking for extended periods.
