Job Summary
We are seeking compassionate and skilled Midwives and Obstetric Nurses to join our Maternity and Obstetrics Department. The role involves providing comprehensive care to women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. As a key member of our team, you will ensure a safe, positive birth experience, assist with newborn care, and support mothers with health education and recovery post-delivery.
Key Responsibilities
1. Antenatal & Prenatal Care
- Conduct thorough assessments and health screenings for expectant mothers to monitor fetal development and maternal health.
- Educate expectant mothers and families about pregnancy, diet, lifestyle choices, and prenatal care.
- Develop and implement individualized birth plans in consultation with the patient.
2. Labor & Delivery Support
- Provide support and care during labor, including monitoring contractions, assessing fetal heart rates, and documenting labor progress.
- Administer medications, epidurals, and other pain relief options as necessary.
- Assist in normal and assisted deliveries, ensuring adherence to safe birthing practices.
3. Postnatal Care & Newborn Support
- Conduct routine assessments on mothers and newborns after delivery to monitor their health and recovery.
- Educate new mothers on breastfeeding, newborn care, postpartum hygiene, and self-care practices.
- Address any post-delivery complications and ensure patients are stable before discharge.
4. Complication Management
- Identify and manage pregnancy and delivery-related complications such as pre-eclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress.
- Coordinate with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals to address high-risk pregnancies and emergency deliveries.
- Implement emergency interventions, including neonatal resuscitation, when necessary.
5. Patient & Family Education
- Provide counseling on family planning, reproductive health, and postpartum care.
- Offer emotional and informational support to mothers, families, and caregivers, ensuring they understand postnatal care routines.
- Engage in community health education on maternal health topics when required.
6. Documentation & Record-Keeping
- Maintain accurate and timely records of patient history, prenatal care, labor details, and postnatal observations.
- Document all interventions, treatments, and patient interactions in line with hospital protocols and Kenyan health standards.
- Participate in regular audits, quality control, and improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Midwifery, Nursing, or related field. Certification in midwifery is required for Midwives.
- Current and valid nursing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a maternity or obstetric setting.
- Training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required.
- Experience in handling emergency obstetric cases and labor complications is highly preferred.
- Strong clinical knowledge in maternal and newborn care.
- Ability to remain calm and provide effective support during high-stress situations, such as labor.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, and a compassionate approach to patient care.
- Proficiency in operating medical equipment related to childbirth and neonatal care.
Working Conditions
- Shift-Based Work: Flexibility to work in rotational shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- Physical Demands: Ability to stand, walk, and engage in physically demanding tasks for extended periods. Must be able to lift and support newborns and assist mothers in mobility.
